The international air quality conference comes to Chile for the first time

ASIC LATAM 2027 is the Latin American edition of the Air Sensors International Conference (ASIC), organized by the UC Davis Air Quality Research Center (AQRC). For the first time in the region, this event will bring together researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and international organizations to tackle critical challenges in air quality monitoring and management.

The conference will take place in Santiago, Chile, from May 17 - 20, 2027, positioning Latin America as a key region for advancing data-driven solutions.

Interdisciplinary collaboration and global reach

The ASIC LATAM 2027 program is designed to connect cutting-edge research with real-world applications, covering topics such as:

• Air quality sensor networks and data systems
• Particulate matter characterization and atmospheric chemistry
• Data validation, satellite–ground integration, and modeling
• Exposure, public health, and environmental equity
• Industrial applications, real-time monitoring, and episodic event management
• Translating data into policy and decision-making

The program aims to strengthen the link between data generation, scientific insight, and its use in regulatory and management contexts.

Conference Themes

Under the theme From Sensors to Solutions: Advancing Global Air Quality Action / De los Sensores a las Soluciones: Avanzando la Acción Global por la Calidad del Aire, the ASIC LATAM 2026 Technical Planning Committee has identified the following session topics for abstract submissions. We invite researchers, practitioners, community members, and policymakers to submit abstracts that align with these focus areas and advance understanding, application, and impact of air quality sensors.

• Air Sensor Networks and Data Systems
• The theme examines critical elements of air sensor networks, encompassing planning, design, long-term operation, and sustainability within the Latin American context. Sessions will address sensor performance across diverse regional climates, strategies for network deployment and calibration, and technical approaches for multi-pollutant air quality monitoring. The theme invites contributions on long-term monitoring networks, sensor maintenance and operational logistics, and methods for data transfer, analysis, storage, and management. Additional topics include data platforms, visualization dashboards, and data governance frameworks relevant to the Global South. Submissions may address technical developments, strategic considerations, policy implications, and applied case studies that advance implementation and management.

  Environmental Sensor Performance in Latin American Climates
  Data Platforms, Dashboards, and Data Governance in the Global South
  Long term monitoring networks
  Air quality (technical measurement and multi-pollutants monitoring methods)
• Exposure, Health, and Equity
• The theme explores the links between air pollution exposure, health outcomes, and social vulnerability in Latin America. Sessions will address urban air quality sources, including transport, industry, and waste, and their impacts on short- and long-term health. Sessions will include the effect of ozone pollution, volatile organic compounds, among other pollutants, as well as integrated assessments of air pollution and heat exposure. Presentations that emphasize differential exposure and health risks among vulnerable populations, including children, older adults, and marginalized communities are welcome. Contributions may present exposure assessment methods, sensor-based studies, epidemiological analyses, and applications that support public health decision-making and policies aimed at reducing environmental health inequities.

  Short and Long Term Exposure and Health
  Air Quality and Vulnerable Populations in Latin America
  Ozone Pollution, VOCs, Integrated Pollution and Heat Exposure
  Indoor Studies
• Applied Monitoring Strategies across Ecosystems and Industries
• This theme highlights applied and context-specific uses of air monitoring to address environmental challenges in Latin America. Sessions will feature case studies focused on the Amazon forest and ecosystem governance, including fires, smoke, and black carbon, as well as rural air quality within the agro-industrial nexus. Topics include air quality impacts of climate change related to land use, wildfires, glaciers, and short-lived climate pollutants, along with emissions from mining, transportation, and industrial activities. Contributions will emphasize incident response, applied monitoring strategies, and real-world deployments that support environmental management, public health protection, and policy decision-making.

  Amazon and other Ecosystems Governance on Fire, Smoke, and Black Carbon
  Rural Air Quality and the Agro-Industrial Nexus
  Climate change (as it relates to fires, land use, and short-lived climate pollutants)
  Deposition of pollutants onto ice
  Air Quality in the Mining and Transport Sectors
• From Data to Policy and Action
• This theme examines pathways for translating air quality data into effective policy, regulation, and community-driven action in Latin America. Sessions will address the role of data in advocacy, air quality management, and integrated climate and air quality policy development. Topics include air quality and emission standards, regulatory frameworks, compliance mechanisms. Presentations on sensor standards and certification processes are welcome. The theme also highlights civil society initiatives, and strategies for communicating air sensor data to diverse audiences. Contributions may present policy case studies, stakeholder engagement approaches, and risk communication based on visualizations tools that support evidence-based decision-making and meaningful environmental response.

  Regulation and Compliance
  Sensor Standards and Certification
  Communicating Air Sensor Data
• Partnerships, Funding, and Latin American Success Stories
• This theme examines community-scale air monitoring initiatives enabled by advances in sensor technologies and collaborative governance models. Sessions will explore how multi-sector partnerships support sustainable funding, long-term network operation, and effective program implementation. Emphasis is placed on Latin American success stories that demonstrate how evidence generated through monitoring has driven policy change, strengthened community advocacy, and informed decision-making. Contributions on citizen science are encouraged, including approaches focused on community engagement, governance, and neighborhood-level exposure assessment. Submissions highlighting replicable and scalable programs, cross-sector collaboration, and lessons learned from successful partnerships are particularly welcome.
